Sacred Sexuality: Sexual Health & Self-Care
Sex is medicine. As one of the three pillars of life and longevity, sex is fundamental to our existence and vital to health and well-being. Making love enhances immune function, encourages restful sleep and promotes overall health.
According to the yogic philosophy Purusharthas, the four aims of life are Dharma (duty), Artha (wealth), Kama (desire) and Moksha (liberation). Of these four, Moksha is the ultimate goal in life. However, it is by honoring all of these aims that we find true healing and well-being.
Sexual health belongs primarily in the realm of Kama or desire.
Yet, sex can be a sacred spiritual practice, holding the potential for transformation, heightening awareness, and awakening primal wisdom. Consciously channeling and transmuting sexual energy (brahmacharya) is also sacred practice. Learning to play with, discover, and control this powerful creative energy is a part of total mind-body-spirit healing.
There are so many layers to sexual health. As we learned, even seemingly unrelated aspects of our lives like creative expression can be the root cause of physical imbalance. Because imbalances can arise from the invisible spheres of our minds, building awareness of our subconscious patterns, traumas, addictions, and blockages is an integral part of this "work."
